SEGA has released the original soundtracks of the four main Panzer Dragoon games on digital stores such as iTunes and Amazon Music. Not only is this the first time that SEGA has released these soundtracks digitally, but the covers and tracklists have been translated into English too; previously only the Panzer Dragoon Orta Official Soundtrack, along with the Sega Ages and vinyl releases of Panzer Dragoon’s soundtrack were translated.

Note, this is the first time that the Panzer Dragoon Saga original soundtrack has been named after the English language version of the game.

The soundtracks can be purchased from the following links:

The new albums are available from the links above in English, and there’s also Japanese versions of each soundtrack. The covers are the same, except for Panzer Dragoon Saga’s cover, which uses the game’s Japanese title instead.

Right now, these newly released digital soundtracks are only available to purchase, not rented. For example, they can be purchased from iTunes, but not streamed with an Apple Music subscription. This has been the case for other SEGA soundtracks such as that of Skies of Arcadia which has only been available on the former service for some time. So, don’t count on these original soundtracks coming to Apple Music if this trend is set to continue (update: the Skies of Arcadia soundtrack is reportedly on Spotify, so there may be hope yet). But in any case, let’s be glad that the soundtracks are now easy to listen to without having to resort to eBay or piracy. Thanks SEGA!

Panzer Dragoon Saga's 20th Anniversary: Across the Web

It’s been a week since Panzer Dragoon Saga turned twenty and fans of the classic Saturn RPG have been celebrating in all sorts of ways. A number of articles about the game and the new re-arranged album “Resurrection” have been posted on various websites.

Ben Lindbergh from The Ringer has written a detailed piece called The Ruinous Road of Gaming’s Missing Masterpiece. He says, “Twenty years after its creation, it also remains nearly impossible to play, a cult classic whose elusiveness mirrors the misery that suffused its development, setting, and story.” The article is in part based on correspondence with Chris Lucich and Matt Underwood, the game’s localisation team from Sega of America. A great read for any fan of Panzer Dragoon Saga wanting to know more about how the game was localised.

There’s also another article discussing Yukio Futatsugi’s ideas for a remake of Panzer Dragoon Saga (purely hypothetical). He imagines an online component, like Dark Souls, but where the content of each player’s game is a different parallel world. Multiple divine visitors influencing each other’s version of the world via Sestren perhaps? He also says that he would make a Panzer Dragoon Saga remake open world and allow the player to make their own choices. “Make a strong correlation between the characters’ responses and behaviors and the player’s actions, so that the characters change depending on the player’s choices,” he says. All this sounds intriguing and it’s a shame that its probably too expensive for any publisher to consider.

There’s also another review of “Resurrection” by Eliot-Ness of Panzer Dragoon World. Be sure to check it out if you want another opinion on the new album besides the review I posted earlier.

Finally, Brave Wave has posted on Twitter thanking everyone who helped make the anniversary album an “astounding success”. There’s more news from Brave Wave too: there will be a Saori Kobayashi concert at Universal Fan Con in Baltimore this year, featuring music from Panzer Dragoon Saga. The game we remember may have ridden off into the sunset on the Saturn twenty years ago, but legacy of Panzer Dragoon Saga is alive and well.

Today marks the 20th anniversary since the original release of Panzer Dragoon Saga! To celebrate, you can now listen to the full album of “Resurrection: Panzer Dragoon Saga 20th Anniversary Arrangement”, a 20 track compilation of the game’s music rearranged by original composer Saori Kobayashi.

Resurrection: Panzer Dragoon Saga 20th Anniversary Arrangement on Bandcamp

The icing on the cake? “Resurrection” is currently the number one selling video game soundtrack on Bandcamp!

What do you all think of the new album? You can find my thoughts about the new album in my full review of “Resurrection”. Spoiler: I liked it.

Twenty years… has it really been that long? This anniversary brings to mind a quote from Gash from near the end of Panzer Dragoon Saga, when all hope seemed to be lost:

Without any fire power, what can we do? All is lost. I can’t go after Sestren. Protecting the people of this village comes first. We’ve lost this time, but we’ll have another chance. 20, 30 years… If we’re lucky.

Panzer Dragoon Saga really did get another chance, twenty years later. Thanks to Saori Kobayashi, Eri Ito, and everyone at Brave Wave for making “Resurrection: Panzer Dragoon Saga 20th Anniversary Arrangement” possible!

“Resurrection”, the arrangement album for Panzer Dragoon Saga’s upcoming 20th anniversary, is now available to preorder!

You can stream four tracks from the album for free on Bandcamp right now. These tracks are “Ecce valde generous ale”, “Nomad”, “Atolm Dragon”, and “Village of Zoah”. I recommend listening to “Nomad” (the Caravan theme) especially.

You can pre-order a digital version of the album (in the usual Bandcamp formats), as well as a CD or vinyl version. The album is a single bilingual release, and the full version will be released on the 29th of January, the 20th anniversary of the Japanese release of Azel: Panzer Dragoon RPG. More details are available on Brave Wave’s website. And you can expect a full review from yours truly on the 29th.

In addition to all this, Andrew Webster from The Verge has written an article about the new album which was based on an interview with Saori Kobayashi. She says:

By rearranging the album this time, I was able to achieve the kind of music that I wanted to do 20 years ago. This project allowed me to achieve things that weren’t possible then.

Interestingly, she’s interested in releasing a similar album based on the Panzer Dragoon Orta soundtrack as well as revisiting some of the Panzer Dragoon Saga tracks that didn’t make it into “Resurrection” due to time constraints. Let’s see what the future holds!

Over the last weekend, Saori Kobayashi and the Triforce Quartet recorded five songs for a new album that the Panzer Dragoon composer has been working on. The Triforce Quartet shared the following on Instagram:

We just had an incredible weekend recording for a ‘secret’ project with the incredible Panzer Dragoon composer, Saori Kobayashi @bravewavemusic ! Can’t wait to share more with you soon!

Although details about the new album are scarce at this point, we do know that the Triforce Quartet have played live Panzer Dragoon music before, and that there is a big anniversary coming up that relates to one of Saori Kobayashi’s projects.

No matter what Kobayashi is working on, I’m sure we’ll be happy with the result. But if this new album is an orchestra recording of music from Panzer Dragoon Saga (to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary next year) many fans will be especially happy.

Futatsugi Wants to Revisit Old SEGA IP

Published by Draikin .

In a recent interview with Polygon, Yukio Futatsugi revealed some information on the projects he’s currently working on. While the article is mostly about Space Channel 5 VR, it also suggests that we may see Futatsugi’s Grounding Inc. work on other SEGA IP in the future. He noted that recently SEGA seems to be more open to licensing their IP to other companies. At the same time, he’s also thinking about new VR projects Grounding Inc. can pursue. The interviewer also asked him about Panzer Dragoon in particular:

Asked about Panzer Dragoon — the series he’s best known for — in VR, Futatsugi said if the opportunity came up he would love to work on it, though he wouldn’t want to port the old games over in a straightforward way. He would want to do something new. He clarified, though, that at the moment “there’s no specific movement happening on the Panzer Dragoon front”.

It’s a logical assumption that the “something new” is referring to VR. While Futatsugi has nothing to announce yet, these comments at least hint at the possibility of the Panzer Dragoon franchise making an unlikely return after a long absence. Let’s hope that’s the case!

Campaign For a Panzer Dragoon Open World Action RPG

My name is Olivier aka Eliot-Ness aka Panzer Dragoon World.

Last summer, I decided to start a campaign in favor of a new open world action RPG Panzer Dragoon game.

The campaign was created mainly due to my long lasting love for the almost twenty year old Panzer Dragoon Saga, but also because I was hooked by how the game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild broke the conventions of the past games in that series. I thought a similar methodology would be beneficial to the Panzer Dragoon series.

So I started the campaign on Twitter and published a petition on Change.org. Quickly, the campaign got a lot of attention (+200 followers within a month).

The maker of the series, Mr Yukio Futatsugi, started following us with his own personal account.

Recently I have been interviewed by RadioSEGA and this is a good summary of the campaign. You can listen the segment on SoundCloud:

In short, I think giving visibility to the series cannot do any harm. Some of us want remasters, I want them too and maybe we will get remasters first. Maybe we will get a new game, maybe both. But every bit of support will count: from acorns grow oak trees.

So follow us, sign the petition, and spread the word! Here are all the relevant links:

Thank you. We can do this!

A video clip has also been released where Futatsugi talks about The Good Life:

Marketed as a “Debt Repayment Life Simulation RPG”, The Good Life will take place in an RPG style town. “Each character has a unique personality and lives out a unique life” which is consistent Futatsugi’s approach to Panzer Dragoon Saga’s Zoah: depth over breadth.

You can visit campaign page over on Fig for more information and also invest in the project. If The Good Life is funded, delivery is expected for Q3 2019 for PC and Playstation 4.

Panzer Dragoon Orta has not been confirmed. However this is definitely a step in the direction of Panzer Dragoon Orta on Xbox One becoming a reality.

Albert Penello from Microsoft also confirmed that original Xbox discs and digital purchases will carry over, so if support for Panzer Dragoon Orta is added at some point you won’t necessarily have to re-purchase the game to play it on Xbox One.

Famitsu recently interviewed Panzer Dragoon creator Yukio Futatsugi. Although the Google translation of the interview is rough, his comments about Panzer Dragoon and VR can be interpreted as follows:

  • He thinks rail shooters and VR are very compatible.
  • He says that although rail shooters are an old game style, we are currently at the dawn of VR, so the genre is a good match.
  • He thinks the combination of rail shooter and VR present in Rez Infinite is very good.
  • He thinks that when you play a VR rail shooter, the immersive feeling it creates makes us forget that it is an old game style.
  • He thinks that if someone made a VR version of Panzer Dragoon, it would be fun.
  • He is thinking of making a VR rail shooter.

Of course, Futatsugi’s development studio Grounding Inc doesn’t own the rights to Panzer Dragoon (or Crimson Dragon), so any VR rail shooter than he made would likely be a new IP. Unless Sega or Microsoft allow him to use their intellectual property for the new VR shooter.

Emily McMillan from VGMO (Video Game Music Online) recently interviewed Panzer Dragoon Saga composer Saori Kobayashi at MAGFest 2017.

Read the Full Interview on VGMO

In the Interview, Saori Kobayashi shares some interesting insight into her album Terra Magica, which was released last year, in how it relates to Panzer Dragoon:

I’m very well aware that most of my fans are Panzer Dragoon music fans so I definitely wanted to keep elements of that in place for this album. In terms of the packaging on the CD–as we all know, Panzer Dragoon is a game series that takes place in the sky, and that’s been a very prominent theme of those games, but for something like Terra Magica, I wanted to focus on the ground a bit more. I wanted to show that part of the Panzer Dragoon world that has not been as prominently featured, if that makes sense.

There is no game, but it’s supposed to sound like it came from a game. It’s an album that’s made specifically for people who like to listen to that, my old music.

Also, we learn that the music of Crimson Dragon was changed specifically for the Xbox One version. The arrangement was done by an orchestra, and a more Hollywood-based composer, however the Xbox 360 versions of some of those tracks ended up on her album Journey. “Journey would be the way I would have done it.” Kobayashi says.

Alexander Aniel from Brave Wave also revealed that there’s more coming from Saori Kobayashi in the future. “Big anniversary coming up!”, he says. Could he be talking about Panzer Dragoon Saga’s 20th anniversary next year?

Saori Kobayashi played six tracks, with assistance from Yumiko Takahashi, the Triforce Quartet, and others. The songs played include music from the Panzer Dragoon and Crimson Dragon games.

  • 0:00 - Dance of Seekers (from Terra Magica)
  • 8:03 - Bravehearted (from Terra Magica)
  • 15:05 - Dragon’s Journey (from Journey, based on the theme of Crimson Dragon)
  • 19:42 - Tsubasa (from Journey, based on the camp theme from Crimson Dragon: Side Story)
  • 27:43 - Sona Mi Areru Ec Sancitu (from Panzer Dragoon Saga)
  • 33:23 - Anu Orta Veniya (from Panzer Dragoon Orta)

The last four songs include vocals by Yumiko Takahashi. All of the performances are great and I particularly liked the addition of the flute and violin in the intro to Sona Mi Areru Ec Sancitu.
