Panzer Dragoon for PS2 at TGS? It's Looking Likely

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

Game-Science.com has posted a list of games that will be appearing at this years Tokyo Game Show. Among the games, the Sega Ages “remake” of the original Panzer Dragoon appeared on the list with a release date of Quarter 4 2005. On the official Sega Ages lineup page it’s stated that the next batch of Sega Ages titles will be released before March 2006 (thanks, Abadd, for the translation from Japanese), so there doesn’t seem to be any conflict there. I think we can at least be certain that Sega Ages: Panzer Dragoon will be released sometime before the end of March 2006.

To reconfirm Panzer Dragoon’s appearance at Tokyo Game Show, there is a picture of the game on display on this page. If you look closely at the game’s logo you’ll notice a white blur that isn’t normally displayed beneath the original Panzer Dragoon logo. Does that mean that this new “subtitle” (if that’s what it is) confirms that the game will be a full remake? Who knows, but it’s certainly looking likely that this will be more than just a straight port without any changes. Thanks to Lance Way for this information and for the zoomed-in image.

There’ll be another (much needed) update in the next few days featuring some new articles for The Will of the Ancients, so stay tuned…

Panzer Dragoon Feature in GamesTM Magazine

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

In the latest issue of GamesTM (issue 34), forum-goer Szczepaniak has written a nice article that covers the history of the Panzer Dragoon series. I thought this would be worth mentioning here, as those of you who are in the UK should be able to obtain a copy of the magazine quite easily. For everyone else, I am told that the article should be available on the site’s website in about four months, or if you know where to look there are some scans floating around the net…

Not much else for this update, as things have been pretty quiet in Panzer Dragoon community recently. No further news about the updated version of Panzer Dragoon for the Playstation 2 has been revealed, but I’m sure some additional information will become available nearer to the game’s release. One thing that may interest eager rumour listeners, however, is a recent interview with between Sega and Nintendo Power. According to IGN.com:

When asked about the possibility of classic Sega properties such as Panzer Dragoon and Shinobi one day appearing on the Nintendo Revolution, Jeffrey commented that it’s something Sega is definitely looking into.

Does that mean that Panzer Dragoon 5 is currently being planned for the Revolution or another next generation console? Probably not, but there’s no harm in a bit of healthy optimism.

That's Right, Panzer Dragoon on a Sony Console

Published by Solo Wing in News

As reported on IGN.com, Sega are re-releasing the original Panzer Dragoon game on Sony’s Playstation 2 in an upcoming Sega Ages pack. As well as including a straight port of the original game, it sounds like Sega are planning to include a full remake of the 1995 Saturn game as well. The prospect of yet another port of the original game isn’t anything to get excited about, but if Sega manage to create a smoother, graphically updated version of the game with improved controls then we may have something to look forward to after all.

Sega will be releasing Sega Ages Volumes 20 and 21 on October the 27th this year, and Panzer Dragoon is set to be included in the 22nd instalment so I’m guessing that it will be available later in the year, or sometime in 2006. No release date has been confirmed for countries outside of Japan, so the game may or may not actually be localised. However, considering that Panzer Dragoon never had much dialogue anyway, this should only be a minor problem for English speakers who end up playing through the import version.

The Will of the Ancients will have more information about the Panzer Dragoon remake as it becomes available.

Update (08/07/2005) - It seems that I misread the line about Panzer Dragoon appearing on Sega Ages Volume 22. In actual fact, Panzer Dragoon has only been confirmed to be among the games “set to debut starting with Volume 22”, so it won’t necessarily be on Volume 22 itself.

Panzer Dragoon's 10th Anniversary Has Dawned on Us

Published by Geoffrey in News

It’s hard to believe that the Panzer Dragoon series entered the world of gaming 10 years ago today. Although we’ve received no news of a new Panzer Dragoon game, the series will live on in our hearts for many years to come. Truth be told, recent events in the Sega community have robbed me of much of my enthusiasm. After watching Sega turn the latest Shining Force game into an Action/RPG (sacrificing the trademark turn-based Strategy/RPG gameplay that made the series so great in the first place) all in the name of money, I dread to think what Sega would do with a new Panzer Dragoon RPG. However, since many of the original creators of the series still work for Sega, we can probably rest assured that the future of the series is in capable hands… assuming of course we ever live to see a new game.

As for this update, to mark the series’ 10th year anniversary, Lance has put together a new products section for the site where you can naturally view every single Panzer Dragoon product released to date, and has given the Game Information section a complete overhaul. It now contains a more comprehensive listing of all the different versions of each game in the series. We owe Lance a debt of gratitude for all the work he has done for the community here.

Chris has also updated the trivia section with a quiz that’s not so easy this time. Even I had trouble giving the correct answers to some of the questions, so good luck!

Is There a New Panzer Dragoon Game in Development?

Published by Solo Wing in News

You may have heard that a new Panzer Dragoon RPG is in the works. Yesterday a video was released onto the Internet; a screener that showed leaked footage of what was supposably the next Panzer Dragoon game: Panzer Dragoon Genos. Unfortunately, after some discussion, it was revealed that the video of Panzer Dragoon Genos was indeed a fake, much to the dismay of optimistic Panzer fans.

However, the trailer is actually very convincing and I would recommend the download to all Panzer Dragoon fans. Lord Craymen and Senor Kaffee, who made the trailer, have released normal and high quality DivX versions on gamefront.de. It’s a German site, but if you scroll down the main page you should be able to find the link with relative ease.

The Will of the Ancients IRC Channel

For the members of the Will of the Ancients forums (although anyone is welcome to join), I have created an IRC channel to discuss Panzer Dragoon topics in real time. For those who don’t know, IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, a fast and popular chat medium for typing conversations to one another across the Internet. The details are:

  • IRC Server: irc.lunarnet.org
  • Port: 6667
  • Channel: #panzerdragoon

For more detailed instructions, see the Chat section, which has a step-by-step guide to connecting to #panzerdragoon using mIRC.

Restructured Forums and Other Additions

The current forums have been restructured. There are now three forums, the Seeker’s Stronghold, the Liberal District, and the Holy District. Hopefully this change will benefit the Panzer Dragoon community. I’ve made a thread explaining the changes, so post any questions you might have there.

A new skin has been submitted by Scorbutman. It works best if you’re using Winamp 2, however the main part still shows up in Winamp 3. You can download it from the Skins section. Also, Neil has written a poem about the drones of the Ancients, which can be read here.

New Forums Soon

Right. So if you’re an active member of the Panzer Dragoon community you’re probably come here to find where on earth the new forums are. For those of you who visit this site but weren’t a member of the Die Welt von Panzer Dragoon forums, let me explain:

Yesterday, lordcraymen, who is in charge of the panzerdragoon.de forums told me his intentions to close the Excavation Camp and the Town of Zoah forums completely. As the Panzer Dragoon community would otherwise be homeless, I have agreed to host a new set of forums for fans of the series on this website. The Tower of Uru (name subject to change) will carry on what the Excavation Camp started - it will act as a place for fans to discuss anything Panzer related.

However, please note that these are completely new forums! Due to the number of bugs on the old forums and the increasing difficulty to backup the database, the new forums will not contain the existing messages and rankings, so you will have to do a clean sign up once again.

The Tower of Uru should be online later today, but it will by no means be complete. I will be working on a nicer layout over the next few weeks.

The Will of the Ancients Forums Are Online

The new forums, titled “The Tower of Uru” and “Uru Underground Ruins” are ready for posting on. All the guff you need to know is basically in the first thread on the Tower of Uru forum, but if there are any questions or problems please leave a message or send me an email. These forums are incomplete in design, but should be fully working and ready for Panzer Dragoon discussion.

The Will of the Ancients now has its own domain, panzerdragoon.net. It’s fitting for a site that is made up of content from so many Panzer Dragoon fans. I would advise people to update their bookmarks although with an address this short it should be easy enough to remember. :)

I bought the domain along with 250 megabytes of webspace several days ago through E-Starr Webhosting. It means that the site will be able to grow bigger, hopefully with more interactive features.

Thanks to the new domain, my email address is now chris@panzerdragoon.net - I will continue to check the old one for a while however.

I should also note that I have decided to refrain from posting spoiler warnings on this site from now on. Panzer Dragoon Orta has been out for three months in Europe so everyone should have had a decent length of time to play through it. You have been warned.

Play Panzer Dragoon Saga in 1600x1200 on Your PC!

This is no joke :)

GiriGiri Saturn, the first completed Saturn emulator, can now be downloaded by clicking here [link removed]. So far the results are amazing, although you will need a beast to run it. I tried it on a 500Mhz Pentium III and Panzer Dragoon Saga ran at about 5 frames per second, which is quite slow compared to the usual 25 or 30, but I have been told it will run close to full speed on a 2Ghz machine.

No matter how old your PC is (unless it is too old to load up the software) the games will look beautiful, far more cleaner looking than on a television screen. Just look at these screenshots that I took to see what I’m talking about:

  • GiriGiri Saturn 01 [image removed]
  • GiriGiri Saturn 02 [image removed]
  • GiriGiri Saturn 03 [image removed]
  • GiriGiri Saturn 04 [image removed]
  • GiriGiri Saturn 05 [image removed]

For help on getting the emulator running (it’s not so straight forward) have a read of this thread on the panzerdragoon.de forums.

Server Problems

Published by Solo Wing in News

As some of you have noticed, The Will of the Ancients was offline for several days (since about the 11th) but now everything has been fixed and there should be no problems viewing the site. The reason The Will of the Ancients reverted back to update 49 can be explained too. Here’s what IUG, the Webmaster of Macemu.com, had to say about it:

If you saw on the front page, we just went through some server problems, and we got moved. Unfortunately the backup they used to move us was old, so all the sites went back about 2-3 weeks.

Thankfully I had the whole site backed up on my hard drive and was able to return the site to the way it was.

Hidden Panzer Dragoon Saga Book Discovered!

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

Another book has been found in Panzer Dragoon Saga… and I thought that I had read them all! The book, which goes by the name of the Drone Record, can only be found (as far as I know) by browsing through the MENUBK.BIN file on any of the four CDs with a computer. I can’t thank Seeking Wing enough for discovering this great secret.

Also in this update, there are two new theories and a new chapter of a fanfic. The fanfic update is Chapter 3 of Panzer Dragoon X that explains how a certain character is found. Geoffrey has written two new theories, the first being about Panzer Dragoon Zwei’s True Ending. With the recent confirmation that the Sky Rider was not Lundi some things have to be rethought and this theory does that nicely. The other theory is about Lagi’s different forms and how many of them may have been prototypes of the Solo Wing. Both theories can be found in the Theories section.

The new section that I had planned for the 50th Update has been delayed, but it’s still coming and should be ready in the next week or two.

A New Review, Theory, and a Confirmation

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

There is a new review of the original Panzer Dragoon game, written by Neil in the Reviews section, which is written from a modern day perspective. Also, Geoffrey has written a theory suggesting that the golden dragon we see in Sestren’s memory orbs could have actually been the Dark Dragon. This can be read in the Theories section.

There have been a few other minor updates as well. I have added screenshots of the PC version Panzer Dragoon to various parts of the site and there is now a secrets page for Panzer Dragoon Orta containing a few hidden things that can be found in the game. Check out the various sections for their updates. If all goes as planned there will be a new section in the 50th update.

One last but very important thing: in a recent interview with Akihiko Mukaiyama, the director of Panzer Dragoon Orta, he confirmed that the Sky Rider was not Lundi. However this confirmation still doesn’t explain just who this rider was and his identity has only become more mysterious because of this. You can read the original interview (in Spanish) by clicking here or the translated version in this thread. Thanks to Nightwalker for telling us about it!

The Will of the Ancients Moved to Decent Webspace

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

The Will of the Ancients has always been a free Geocities site, consisting of ads and limited bandwidth. However the site has grown past the 15 Megs that were given to me for free, and as a result I had to remove the screenshots of Panzer Dragoon Orta, which have been missed by more than one person.

No longer will this be a problem. The website has been moved to a proper paid-for-hoster, although I don’t have to pay anything thanks to the kindness of Abraham from Sega Zero. The Will of the Ancients now has over twice as much webspace, more bandwidth, and no ads. What this means to you, the visitor, is that you will experience a faster and cleaner looking website …hopefully with more Panzer Dragoon content added in the next few months.

Despite a few disadvantages such as not being able to host the Panzer Dragoon Mini ROM and a longer web address, I think everyone will benefit from the move.

Today the Dragon Will Return to the Skies

Published by Solo Wing in News

I haven’t heard any details on the launch of Panzer Dragoon Orta yet but it was planned to be released in Japan on the 19th of December… which is today in most countries. It’s been a while since Panzer Dragoon Saga came out in 1998, but the long wait for another game is now over. The series will be introduced to a whole new audience and we can only expect the Panzer Dragoon community to grow because of this. My thanks go to the folks at Smilebit for reviving this amazing franchise. :)

Soon many of you will know the whole story of Panzer Dragoon Orta and because of this I will not be excepting any more fan fiction or other information that is about the game for this website. Reviews, of course, are most welcome so long as they don’t contain any spoilers. When I have played through game myself, new sections will most likely open up on the game but all of these will contain spoiler warnings. It is only fair that those who have not had the chance to play Panzer Dragoon Orta yet have the opportunity to go through the full game as it was intended to be experienced.

Temporary "Excavation Camp 911" Forum Online

If you’re a regular at the forum on Die Welt von Panzer Dragoon then you probably already know that the site has been down for several days now. Since the site may be down for a while, there is a temporary hosted forum which you can visit called Excavation Camp 911 which was set up by Arc’engal along with several other message boards on his Panzer Dragoon website, The Temple of Sestren.

On a lighter note… there is only four more days until the Return of Panzer Dragoon!

New Panzer Dragoon Orta Character Details Revealed

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

The Official Panzer Dragoon Orta website has been updated with a new design and some nice concept art. There is also some information about Orta and the Empire. From the rough Babel Fish translation it seems Orta is only 13 years old and for an unknown reason was isolated in a prison and raised there since she was a young child. When the Empire attacks, Orta manages to escape on the back of the dragon. The website also states that the new Emperors name is Yatsushiro.

I have also found out that the freaky looking drone we saw in the E3 trailer will go by the name of Abadd, which has been the screen name our friendly leak at the Excavation Camp for several months now! Thanks to Ryu for this information which was taken from the Gaming-Age forums.

After this update I am going to try and avoid posting anything that could even remotely be classed as a spoiler on this website. As the Japanese release of Panzer Dragoon Orta approaches more and more will be revealed about the story so I’d like to keep this place spoiler free for as long as possible. I’ll update with more info on how I will manage these spoilers soon.

A Drone's Dream Chapter and Orta Features Revealed

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

The third chapter of Geoffrey’s piece of fan fiction, A Drone’s Dream is now online. Being a fan of drones myself, I am finding this an interesting read and I would recommend any Saga fan to check it out. The first two chapters have also been edited in a few subtle ways, such as extra descriptions here and there. All three chapters can be found in the Fan Fiction section.

If you go to sega.jp/x/pdo you will see that there are two new modes mentioned for Panzer Dragoon Orta. The first is ‘Scenarios’ and the second one ‘Mission’. What I find exciting is the picture to the right that shows a Baldor on the screen, but no dragon. Could this be mean that Morbo is a playable character? I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough but until then it is certainly something to look forward to. Who would have thought when first playing Panzer Dragoon Saga back in 1998 that one day we would actually be able to play as one of those fearsome beasts?

What We Already Knew and a Little Bit More

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

Sega of Japan has released some information on features that will be available in Panzer Dragoon Orta. Most of this we already know, such as the original Panzer Dragoon being included in the package, but there is also some new information. The game will feature a films section where players can view some of the full motion videos (hopefully uncompressed this time!) from the Saturn titles. There will be an option to play through some of the game levels as different characters too.

Panzer Dragoon Zwei on PC

Avatar

Published by Solo Wing in News

Sega and Kansai Multimedia plan to give users of the Broadband Club and CyberDisc service access to download emulated versions of the Saturn games Golden Axe: The Duel and Panzer Dragoon Zwei! Sega hasn’t commented on pricing or whether the games will be available through some other method, but they are expected to downloadable later this month in Japan. To run the emulated Panzer Dragoon Zwei on your computer you’ll need a Windows compatible PC with a 2GHZ Pentium 4 processor and 64MB VRAM. In other words anything less than a beast won’t be able to handle it.

New Appendix Mode in Panzer Dragoon Orta

Like the title says, a new option has been revealed for Panzer Dragoon Orta as part of Pandra’s Box. The Appendix option will have all sorts of images and information on the Saturn Panzer Dragoons, so those who enjoyed the past games have something to look forward to (this sounds great!). Below are some of the things that will be included in the Appendix mode:

  • FILMS
  • ILLUSTRATION
  • EVENTS
  • PANZER DRAGOON (I presume this is the complete version of the original game)

A small update to say I’ve changed how the news on this site will work slightly. Basically when the main page gets more than ten news stories on it I will put them onto another page that can be viewed by clicking on a link at the bottom the screen. This should make viewing the front page a slightly quicker process. Each news story will also now have a number (this one, for example, is 26) so they’ll be easier to find. It’s all about keeping this place tidy as well as ease of use.

A Mention in the Official Xbox Magazine!

Published by Solo Wing in News

Although I’ve never intended this site to be more than a hobby and personal tribute to the Panzer Dragoon series, it’s great news that I’ve just been given a bit of extra coverage. The Will of the Ancients was mentioned in the November issue of the Official US Xbox Magazine under the old URL of azelonline.cjb.net (which still works thankfully!). I didn’t know anything about it until a Panzer fan known as Chuck emailed me about it. Since we usually get the UK gaming magazines here in New Zealand I wasn’t able to pick up a copy but Lagi kindly scanned the page so I could see it for myself. You can view the page by clicking here.
