Xbox Series X/S Supports Saturn Emulation Using RetroArch

Running the original Panzer Dragoon trilogy and Panzer Dragoon Orta on the same console might actually be a reality now thanks to the Xbox Series X/S's Developer Mode and RetroArch!

Running emulators on video game consoles isn’t anything new, but the process involved was often complex and typically involved modding the console. That barrier of entry may very well be lowered with the newly released Xbox Series X/S consoles, which make things a lot simpler while at the same time providing the processing power needed to run a wide range of emulators. In the video below, YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer demonstrates running RetroArch, a frontend for a collection of emulators, on the Xbox Series S. The entire process of getting everything up and running is explained in the video, but it uses the console’s officially supported developer mode, which allows installing UWP applications (including RetroArch) on the console. At around 8:26 we can see Modern Vintage Gamer play Saturn games on the Xbox Series S, including Panzer Dragoon Zwei.!

This makes the Xbox Series S in particular an interesting console for retro gaming given its relatively low $299 price point. But for Panzer Dragoon fans especially it means they can potentially play every mainline Panzer Dragoon game including the Xbox exclusive Panzer Dragoon Orta on the same console. The original Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon Saga weren’t demonstrated in the video, but they should work as well on the Beetle Saturn emulator used in RetroArch. And with PS2 emulation for RetroArch also being a work-in-progress, perhaps even the Japan-only Sega Ages release of Panzer Dragoon might end up being playable as well. Panzer Dragoon: Remake is also set to release on Xbox One soon. All this means the Xbox Series X/S offer a compelling choice for people looking to play both new and old games without requiring too much setup.
