Panzer Dragoon Unlockable Features

Contributed By:

Although the original game contains no where near the amount of unlockables found in Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Panzer Dragoon Orta, it does contain a few neat extras like alternative weaponary and a dragon only mode.

Credit goes to the excellent Japanese site Panzer Dragoon Academy for some helpful clarifications regarding the information on these pages.

There are a few hidden features in Panzer Dragoon that can be unlocked if you perform particularly well in the main game, and these are detailed below. However, as Panzer Dragoon doesn’t create a save-game file in your Saturn’s memory, any features that you unlock can only be accessed until you turn the power off; fortunately though, these features can also be accessed with a button code, which is covered on the Cheat Codes page.

Alternative Guns

If you finish the game on Normal Mode without dying once, you’ll gain access to a couple of alternative guns, which you can use if you start a new game. At the loading screen where an episode’s name is displayed, you can choose one of these new weapons by pressing Y or Z, and holding that button down until the episode begins.

These alternative guns are considerably more powerful than your normal gun; if you hold the Y button at the episode loading screen, you’ll receive a gun that fires devastatingly fast. If you hold the Z button instead though, the shots from your gun will not only do much more damage than normal, they’ll blast straight through enemies and hit any other enemies behind them. You’ll need to hold down one of these buttons to choose a gun each time you reach an episode’s loading screen though, otherwise you’ll just be given the normal gun again.

Note: Unfortunately these extra weapons don’t seem to be functional in the PC version of the game, or in the version that’s included in Panzer Dragoon Orta; holding buttons at the episode loading screen doesn’t appear to trigger the different weapons.

Alternative Homing Lasers

If you finish the game on Hard Mode without dying once, you’ll unlock two new kinds of homing lasers. These can be accessed exactly like the alternative guns detailed above, but instead of holding Y or Z at an episode’s loading screen, you’ll need to hold B or C; you can also activate these new lasers in addition to those guns. Unlike the powerful hidden guns though, these alternative lasers seem to be fairly similar in strength to your normal lasers, so the difference between them is mainly aesthetic.

Note: Like the alternative guns, these special lasers also don’t seem to be implemented in the PC and Xbox versions of the game.

Play as Only the Dragon

If you finish the game on Easy Mode with a 100% Shot Down Ratio, you’ll be able to play as just the dragon without the rider, but you’ll need to enter a button code first. (If you just try to enter this code on its own, it has no effect.) At the game’s main menu, enter the code Left, Left, Right, Right, Up, Down, Up, Down, L, R; you’ll hear a sound effect if you’ve entered it correctly. As you’ll be playing without the rider, you can no longer use the gun.

On a PC keyboard, the code is Left, Left, Right, Right, Up, Down, Up, Down, Z, C.
